This week, I implemented dark mode for the standard map.
The UI components have responded to device appearance since very early versions of Mapkind GPS, but altering map colors when the device toggles to dark mode is a whole ’nother ballgame.
Since our custom map doesn’t have a built-in “dark” variation, we have to meticulously tweak and tune countless map features to give them that groovy nighttime vibe.
That being said, what the screenshot depicts is a first iteration of dark mode. I can tell right away that many features need better contrast, and we may want to adjust the hue to better complement the UI — but with the architecture in place and functioning well, making color changes will be easy.
No more blindingly bright maps when exploring at night!
