The Unhinged Flexibility of Naming Presets

The Unhinged Flexibility of Naming Presets

For those of you who like to record data — whether you’re out for a short hike or spending a decade on the road — we’re developing Mapkind GPS to make your workflow as easy as possible.

Everyone has a different system for naming their waypoints and track logs. Some might prefer short-form, lowercase names with no spaces, like “hike_challenging_ca,” while others might prefer a more legible format such as “Challenging Hike in California.” Still others might prefer an entirely different approach that utilizes serialization and/or timestamps.

This past summer, I introduced a feature for power users that allows complete customization of the naming suggestions that appear at the time of save. That means saving waypoints or track logs with a single tap — and with a meaningful, context-aware name — becomes perfectly viable.

As an aside, I got carried away developing this feature. It’s something I’ve wanted for years, and while it’s very robust and well beyond the scope of an MVP… it was worth it!
